2/16/2007 Isla Caja de Muertos to Salinas

Approximate mileage:  18 miles

We arrived mid-morning.  Barb rented a car and I accompanied her for a quick trip to the grocery store.

Carol, still in Ponce, asked me to share information with the other boats from Georgetown regarding Gene’s recent hospitalization.  Gene was taken to the hospital on Thursday, February 15 with seizures and dehydration, among other things.  They have taken tests on his heart and brain, which were negative.  He was kept overnight for observation.

The doctor was to give him a colonoscopy today; however, when Carol returned to the hospital this morning, Gene was being moved to Intensive Care.  He has a GI Bleed, which they are trying to control with clotting agents.  There has been a sufficient loss of blood to require transfusions, three times throughout today.  Once the bleeding is controlled, the doctors plan to examine the colon, as well as perform kidney diagnostics.  (His kidneys do not appear to be functioning properly.)

Salinas was a sleepy little town.  The small hardware store was a gem.  The local seamstress was efficient, quickly whipping up a new dodger.  The local beach bar had wonderful BBQ.  Perhaps the most special treat was a woman sitting beside a roadside table beckoning me to play a game of dominoes.
